After Covid-19, everything seems to be changed, especially for college students. Everything changed so fast. One day they were in the classes & the other day staring at the screens trying to keep up with the online classes. The constant anxiety and the fact that they basically lost in-person interactions completely changed how college felt. It’s not just about getting a degree and finding a job after graduation anymore. It feels way bigger than that now. Now, it’s about developing real, adaptable skills and building a career path that can handle uncertainty and take advantage of new opportunities in a rapidly changing world and especially with the advent of AI, traditional job roles have shaken, and job security has become a distant dream; skills that once seemed optional have become a necessity. For any student, it has become essential to plan their career more meticulously than ever.

Of the many effects of COVID-19, the worst has been on the lives of college students. As new and daunting challenges stand in front of them, the skills required to tackle them are still out of sight making the process of career planning even more difficult for college students. Demand for new competencies like AI, data analytics, etc, has left many students struggling to upskill themselves. Due to intense global competition combined with a lack of career guidance and strained financials, college students today face a complex and challenging environment as they attempt to navigate their careers post-pandemic. Many students also missed the bus of practical training and exposure due to the decrease in the number of internship and apprenticeship opportunities available to students. With news pouring in of hiring freezes, layoffs; for example The recent news of Microsoft laying off thousands of its employees worldwide has severely affected the minds of young college students looking to make a career in that field. On top of everything else, figuring out your career got even harder. Virtual networking and remote job fairs just aren’t the same you miss out on those real, face-to-face connections that usually happen at in-person events.

To navigate their career post-covid students would have to adapt to new surroundings, learn new skills & network using platforms like LinkedIn with like-minded people, managers, HRs, etc. They would have to explore unconventional paths & focus on building real, practical skills which employers would really care for.

As discussed above, skills that once seemed optional have become a necessity, and that’s what the graph above shows; skills like resilience, flexibility, creativity, EQ, etc, are becoming more important as the day passes. The adoption of a remote work environment has caused skills of digital literacy & tech adaptability to be of utmost importance. Rise of mental health problems post-COVID-19 due to a change in work environment, society, etc has increased the importance of skills such as high EQ,  resilience, etc. Besides that creativity and adaptability have also taken a front seat due to the rise in creative jobs like content writing, digital marketing, etc. Skills such as leadership, critical thinking and problem solving are still relevant.

As we can see in the graph certain fields have emerged promising for students looking to enter the workforce anytime in future. IT & Cybersecurity top the list, driven by rapid digitization and growing concerns around data protection, cybersecurity, offering roles in cloud computing and software development. Healthcare & Medical services continue to expand with a high demand for professionals in nursing, healthcare administration, etc. Post-Covid the demand for this field has surged rapidly. Likewise, digital marketing and e-commerce have flourished post-lockdown age as online businesses became a norm. Education technology and online learning platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, etc; have also gained momentum. Plus, with all the government push for sustainable development, careers in renewable energy are becoming a pretty big deal as seen in the above pie chart and honestly, it’s not just about job security anymore. A lot of these jobs actually offer something more than work that feels meaningful, flexibility, and plenty of room to grow.

In conclusion things have changed a lot post-covid. The job market looks different and a lot of the old advice doesn’t really work anymore but as we discussed above there will be new opportunities & career paths to follow, though they might not be what you would have initially thought of.

Fields like tech, healthcare, digital marketing, mental health & sustainability are growing fast, with ample of opportunities , it’s not always necessary to have everything figured but by staying open, curious and cautious one can navigate the path of choosing and following an apt career path.
